Family
The family unit is quite possibly one of the most important factors that influences the life of an individual, and many problems within our society can be attributed to the lack of a stable family unit. The factor that heavily characterizes a stable family unit is the presence of both a mother and a father. However, there has been an increasing trend overtime of family households only having half of that. That increasing trend has correlated with a plethora of negative affects, including the cycles of poverty and crime. In order to solve these negative trends, we must look at one of the root causes of those cycles, which we believe is the increasing amount of single-parent households in this nation. The purpose of our website isn’t to advocate for the use of force or coercion to combat the trend of single-parent households, as that would be wrong, inhumane, and against basic free-will. What our project does advocate for is the use of education to help prevent this trend from increasing and to stress the importance of a stable family unit.
One famous piece of American literature titled East of Eden by John Steinbeck depicts a whole lineage of family instability. The Trask family was characterized by heavy amounts of bitter relationships between Cal, Aron, and Adam Trask, where Cal was jealous of Aron and Cal resented his father due to his favoritism towards Aron. The bitter nature of the Trask family can be attributed to the absence of the would-be mother of the family, Cathy. With the presence of a mother, there wouldn’t have been as much tension and conflict present.
